33. Addendum on Election
.... An additional word about election, since a proper context has now been given for it:
.
.... In November, every four years, an American president is elected, but he does not actually become president until his inauguration the next January. And how is he referred to in the meantime? He is called ‘the president elect’.
.... This is the proper sense in which the term ‘elect’ should be understood. We have attained to salvation in the initial sense, and we are now waiting for the consummation of our salvation; we are the ‘elect in Him’, and we await our ‘inauguration’ at His coming.

.... ‘Salvation is of the Jews’ Jesus told us, and God has reserved a remnant unto Himself. Therefore, this Jewish remnant has always been ‘elect’ - since they have always been in line for the consummation of salvation. They are never referred to as ‘called and elect’, as are Gentiles, or the other Jews who were not of the remnant, who fell, but then believed at a later time.

.... Finally, election itself ends in a consummation. As Peter wrote in his second epistle, "be even more diligent to make your calling and election sure." (1:10). Those who succeed in this, and are received by the Lord, are referred to as called, chosen, and faithful (Rev 17:14).
